Michael Jordan donates $2 million to Hurricane Florence relief

Patrice Carmichael, who was forced to leave her home in Lumberton at the weekend as floodwater rose, said she had been promised a hotel room for her, her partner and their four children, but they were still stuck in the Pembroke shelter as of Wednesday.

An environmental threat is also posed by human waste as low-lying municipal sewage plants flood.

And the effects from the slow-moving storm were still being felt Tuesday as record inland river flooding was impacting areas such as Pollocksville in Jones County, where US 17 was impassable.

On Tuesday night, the majority of hotels to the north of Fayetteville were fully booked as people rushed to escape the flood.


Supplies have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters, which also were used to pluck hundreds of desperate people from homes and other structures.

Sanderson Farms, one of the largest poultry producers in North Carolina, lost 1.7 million chickens on its farms, and 60 of its 880 production chicken broiler houses have flooded, the company said in a news release.

Thousands of rescues have taken place in the Carolinas.

Four days after Florence blew ashore and began unloading more than 60cm of rain that paralysed much of North Carolina, Wilmington was still virtually cut off from the rest of the state, with just one road tentatively open as a supply route.

In the town of Fair Bluff, North Carolina, which has struggled to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, only about 50 residents remained on Tuesday, the Fair Bluff police chief, Chris Chafin told Reuters.
