Rackauckas announced that a prominent surgeon and his girlfriend have been charged with sexually assaulting two women and prosecutors suspect there could be many more victims, KTLA reports.

Orthopaedic surgeon Grant W Robicheaux, 38, and Cerissa Laura Riley, 31, were arrested on September 12 after being charged with rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by anaesthesia or controlled substance, and other crimes, Orange County district attorney Tony Rackauckas said. On April 10, they allegedly invited her to a party and brought her back to Robicheaux's apartment "once she was intoxicated".

Neither could be reached for comment on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT).

A Hoag Hospital profile describes him as an orthopaedic surgeon who received his medical degree from Louisiana State University and did his residency at University of California, Irvine Medical Center. "Based on this evidence, we believe there may be many unidentified victims out there".

But prosecutors suspect the case might involve hundreds of other victims.

The couple attended several popular festivals across the country, including Burning Man, and the prosecutor said there may be "many more" victims.

"There are several videos where the women in the videos appear to be highly intoxicated beyond the ability to consent or resist and they're barely responsive to the defendant's sexual advances", said Rackauckas.

"We don't know how many victims there might be out there", Rackauckas said, adding that the Medical Board of California has opened an investigation.

Those videos were recovered this year by Newport Beach detectives.

Investigators are trying to find out whether any of Robicheaux's patients were victims and are concerned people they met at Burning Man and Splash House Festival may have fallen victim.

The couple are charged with two assaults that occurred in 2016. The victim woke up and screamed for help until a neighbor called police. She told authorities she consumed large amounts of alcohol before they invited her to Robicheaux's residence for an afterparty.

"The defendants are accused of supplying multiple drugs to the victim, then raping and orally copulating her while she was prevented from resisting due to intoxicating and controlled substances and they should have reasonably known of her condition", the district attorney's office said.

In October 2016, Robicheaux and Riley met a second victim at a Newport Beach bar, where police say they kept drinking with the victim "until she was no longer conscious".

She alleges the pair sexually assaulted her and meant to rape her before she woke up and screamed for help.

A press release states Riley was also knowingly vicariously in possession of a firearm. The incident was recorded on video, Rackauckas said.

The weapons were found when police searched home in early 2018 and found "large quantities of illegal drugs", according to the district attorney's office.

"We believe the defendants used their good looks and charm to lower the inhibitions of their potential prey", Rackauckas said, releasing an array of information about many locations and events associated with Robicheaux and Riley. The next morning, detectives arrested the couple. Robicheaux's medical license is now under review by the Medical Board of California, CBS2 learned.

Robicheaux and Riley are freed on US$100,000 (NZ$152,000) bail each.
