The straight red means Ronaldo would miss Juventus' trip to Manchester United, where he spent six seasons from 2003 to 2009 and blossomed into one of the world's best players, on Matchday 3 on October 23.

The former Inter Milan defender went down, and Ronaldo reacted angrily - appearing to grab his hair, sparking a mini-brawl.

What did you make of Ronaldo's red card?

It was the first red card in the Champions League in Ronaldo's career, in his 154th appearance.

Dear @ChampionsLeague two of the three games Ronaldo could miss are against United.

With Ronaldo off the pitch, Miralem Pjanic took responsibility and calmly slotted home to put the Serie A champions 1-0 up before the break.

After all, the sending off could see him miss a huge game with Manchester United that would prove a crucial match in the group stages as well as a fairytale reunion.

The first big chance of the match fell to Sami Khedira in the 17th minute, with the ball played to the German around the penalty spot and with no players within tackling distance, but he fired it high into the Valencian sky to let the LaLiga Santander side off the hook.

With the suspended City manager Pep Guardiola forced to watch from the stands, Nabil Fekir then made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute with a sweetly struck drive after being set-up by Memphis Depay.

It could have been 3-0 when Depay hit the post on the hour but after that let-off City earned themselves a lifeline through Bernardo Silva, who produced a smart finish after a superb jinking run from substitute Leroy Sane.

In Group F, Shakhtar Donetsk twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Hoffenheim, who scored goals through Florian Grillitsch and Havard Nordtveit.

On a disastrous night for Real as they lost a Madrid derby for the first time in 14 years, Ronaldo kicked out at Atletico captain Gabi in the final few minutes and was shown a straight red.

Gareth Bale doubled the lead on 58 minutes and a stoppage-time strike from returning striker Mariano Diaz rounded out the scoring at the Bernabeu.
