He was accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long, Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of SC. "You take care of yourself", he said.

Television screens on the walls at the county emergency management centre in Conway, South Carolina, showed scenes of flood damage from around the state.

North Carolina's poultry farms suffered significant losses in Hurricane Florence, while flooding from the storm damaged crops in SC, industry officials said this week.

The former National Basketball Association star says the destruction caused by the hurricane to his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, prompted him to act quickly.

Trump praised first responders and offered comfort to residents who suffered losses in the storm, saying: "To the families who have lost loved ones, America grieves with you, and our hearts break for you". The American Red Cross is providing food and shelter to thousands of people who have been displaced by the hurricane, while the Foundation For The Carolinas' Hurricane Florence Response Fund directs funds to nonprofits in North and SC providing relief to victims of the storm.

"We have never seen one like this", Cooper added. "There will be nothing left undone", he said.

Trump was apparently talking to an older man whose home had been damaged after a large yacht had washed ashore and was shipwrecked against the wooden deck of his porch.

With Wilmington still mostly an island surrounded by Hurricane Florence's floodwaters and people waiting for hours for handouts of necessities like food, North Carolina's governor is pleading with thousands of evacuees to be patient and not return home just yet.

About 3,500 vehicles came through for supplies on the first day they were available, county officials said in a Facebook post.

Heavy flooding from Hurricane Florence is causing a pig poop problem in North Carolina.

And the effects from the slow-moving storm were still being felt Tuesday as record inland river flooding was impacting areas such as Pollocksville in Jones County, where USA 17 was impassable. Trump said, without offering evidence, that Democrats had inflated the figure to make him look bad.

Officials previously had estimated that about 1.7 million chickens had drowned and that the number of potential hog deaths was unknown.

The church was stocked with 1200 meals for locals in need.

Mr. Trump didn't indicate he would direct the Federal Bureau of Investigation to conduct any further review of the situation, saying, "Well, it would seem the Federal Bureau of Investigation really doesn't do that".

President Donald Trump has arrived in storm-ravaged North Carolina to take in the devastation left by Florence. Trump traveled south Wednesday as the state was still grappling with massive recovery efforts. More than 86 inches of rain have fallen so far.
