Gainesville has first positive test of West Nile Virus

The Harris County Mosquito Control office is reporting some mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

For additional information about mosquitoes and West Nile virus, you can visit the Ohio Department of Health website. However, horses with suspected West Nile virus should be isolated so that they do not become a reservoir for infecting more mosquitoes.

The department said the occasional dip in day and evening temperatures hasn't removed the risk of contracting West Nile virus. These individuals are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes during mosquito season, which extends from June 1 through November 1.

Suffolk County has reported three cases of West Nile virus to date this year. While it can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe disease.

People with West Nile show flu-like symptoms, such as fatique and fever, and they usually appear within a week after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito.

Most infected people won't become ill and fewer than 20 percent of those infected will develop mild symptoms. The CDC says to use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents.

Applying repellants to skin often; these can include lotions, liquids or sprays.
