UEFA has confirmed disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Cristiano Ronaldo following his red card in Juventus' Champions League victory over Valencia on Thursday (AEST).

The competition's all-time leading goalscorer was sent off just half an hour into his debut in the tournament for new club Juventus after appearing to briefly pull the hair of defender Jeison Murillo.

Ronaldo who had served the Spanish club for 9 years and helped the club win 4 Champions League titles along with many other trophies, joined Juventus in a surprise move.

It was the 11th red card of Ronaldo's career, while his first in the Champions league and has ruled out the former Real Madrid footballer in their next match against Swiss side Young Boys at home.

UEFA has the power to extend Ronaldo's ban if they deem his conduct to be violent.

Juventus were attacking Valencia's goal from the left-wing when Ronaldo slipped into their penalty area, waiting for a cross.

"From that point of view, it's hard to think that he will only get a one-match ban".

Perez has now spoken openly about the transfer which shocked the football world, and admitted it was purely a case of getting the best price possible once Madrid realised Ronaldo finally wanted to move on.

The encounter will see Ronaldo make an emotional return to Old Trafford, before facing United again, in Turin on November 7.

"But we realise the suspension would be absurd, so no suspension and let's immediately introduce VAR in the Champions League".

"If I had been officiating this game, I would have given Valencia a free-kick and shown a yellow card to each player".
