Rima Das’s 'Village Rockstars' is India’s official entry for Oscars 2019

Now, it has been announced that Rima Das' Indian Assamese film Village Rockstars will be India's official entry at the Oscars next year.

Indian Express quoted Jury member Anant Mahadevan as saying that Village Rockstars is one film that comes closest to global standards.

29 films including Raazi, Padmaavat Hichki, October, Love Sonia, Gulabjaam, Mahanati, Pihu, Kadvi Hawa, Bhogda, Revaa, Bioscopewala, Manto, 102 Not out, Padman, Bhayanakam, Ajji, Nude, Gali Guliiyan were submitted as nominations. In a world where nearly every step taken by females is questioned, 10-year-old Dhunu (Bhanita Das), who belongs to a remote village in Assam, wants to make a name for herself in the world of music.

Rima Das' Village Rockstars is about a young girl who wants to be a guitarist. The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival past year, is in the Kamrupi dialect. At the 65th National Film Awards earlier this year, the 87-minute drama also won four awards - for Best Feature, Best Editing, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Child Artist.

"This is a great day". The film was directed by Rima Das. And it remains to be seen if it will make it to the 91st Academy Awards. "But I am a solo producer without any studio back-up, so it would be great if the governments of India and Assam understand my position and help". Its theatrical release in India is scheduled for 28 September 2018. India has finally picked a film for it's official entry to Oscars 2019 and we are certain it is not what you thought.

Mother India (1958) and Salaam Bombay (1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five. (1988), and Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001).
