Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, who directed films like Rudaali and Daman, passed away on 23 September 2018 after a long battle with kidney cancer. Can't believe you're gone Kalpana. I shall miss you so terribly. "RIP sweetheart", tweeted actress Soni Razdan.

One of the most prolific directors of Indian cinema, and also a powerful female director, Kalpana Lajmi was known for hard-hitting films like National Film Award-winning films like Rudaali (starring Dimple Kapadia), Daman (starring Raveena Tandon), Chingaari (starring Sushmita Sena and Mithun Chakraborty), and Ek Pal (starring Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Farooque Shaikh). Will always remember her with fondness and respect for being a fearless woman and a powerhouse of a person in a male dominated industry. "May she rest in peace".

"Deeply around 4:30 am today morning Kalpana Lajmi passed away".

Lajmi breathed her last at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, where she was admitted in the intensive care unit since Tuesday due to kidney-related issues, the spokesperson added. "Rest in Peace dear Kalpana".

"Got up to hear the sad news of Kalpana Lajmi's demise". So full of life.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted her tribute in a tweet.

Since Kalpana was detected with cancer, several stars in the film world, including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan and Neena Gupta helped her out financially.

The filmmaker is survived by her brother and mother, painter Lalita Lajmi.
