49ers fear Jimmy Garoppolo tore ACL in loss to Chiefs

Garoppolo was scrambling for additional yardage on a late drive when the injury occurred.

Garoppolo signed a five-year deal worth up to $137.5 million last offseason.

How big is the loss of Garoppolo to the 49ers? The Chiefs won by two possessions, and were able to sack the quarterback a few times.

San Francisco proceeded to kick it deep rather than try an onside kick.

The two individual touchdown passes that culminated in the National Football League record were 12 yards in length, the first and second to Demetrius Harris and Sammy Watkins respectively, and a third pass was caught for 4 yards by Chris Conley within the red zone.

FILE: Trainers attend to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) who was injured after a tackle by Kansas City Chiefs defensive back during the second half of a game in Kansas City, MO. Their two starting safeties, Jaquiski Tartt and Adrian Colbert, are also hurt.

That's for sure, especially looking at franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. If he can't return to the 49ers at some point in 2018, San Francisco would have to realistically be thinking about draft picks in the future.

The Chiefs pass rush was present and accounted for in Kansas City's home opener in Arrowhead Stadium.

Facing third-and-goal from the Kansas City 20-yard line with just over five minutes left, Garoppolo ran beyond the line of scrimmage in an attempt to reach the end zone.

That's when the San Francisco quarterback headed for the sideline, made a decision to stay in play rather step out of bounds, and ultimately put the rest of the 49ers' season in question. Practice squad member Nick Mullen is the only other QB now on the Niners' roster.
