After years of being Michael Bay's favourite toy, the Transformers series is about to become something else in the hands of director Travis Knight.

Bumblebee will arrive neatly wrapped in United Kingdom cinemas on Boxing Day this year - and stay tuned to Empire for a trailer breakdown from Travis Knight himself. Steinfeld's Charlie Watson is a teenage girl who discovers that her yellow Volkswagen Beetle is actually a giant alien robot.

The Transformers franchise has been in need of an overhaul for about two or three movies now. The film is about to give OG Transformers fans the thing they've wanted all along: the colourful, stripped-back original designs of the Autobots and Decepticons.

Optimus is only seen as a hologram, but you can hear Cullen's voice, telling Bumblebee that the Cybertronian conflict "rages on" and that he, "must protect Earth and its people".

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town.

We see a few Decepticons, a bit of a snarly looking John Cena, and a glimpse of Cybertron - but the film thankfully still looks like it revolves around Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) and her unexpected friendship with Bee. The film seems to have a much smaller scale considering it is still a Transformers film. It is set for release on December 21st 2018 in the States and December 26th in the UK. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee attempts to brush the sand out of Charlie Watson's (Hailee Steinfeld) hair after he transforms from auto to Autobot, in the new trailer.
