Power lines are destroyed in some areas, and as of Sunday morning, some 70,000 customers remained without power.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford pledged the province's full support to Ottawa residents recovering from Friday's tornadoes. The storm tore roofs off of homes, overturned cars and felled power lines in the area. City officials, including the police chief, urged people to work at home or take the day off.

Environment Canada said that at nearly the same time a second, slightly less powerful, twister touched down in the south Ottawa neighbourhood of Arlington Woods.

"It's weird to be on the other end of things", said Carlson, who also ran a small business out of the home.

Nicole Lowden describes how a tornado Friday destroyed her home in the rural Ottawa community of Dunrobin.

"On behalf of the government of Ontario, I want to tell the people of Ottawa that my thoughts are with them as they work to recover from the tornado and storm that impacted the Ottawa area yesterday; especially to the people of Dunrobin who saw huge damage to their homes and community". On the Ottawa side, 51 homes were destroyed or severely damaged, and this neighbourhood saw the "brunt of the damage", said Mayor Jim Watson.

"The community is going to come together".

Tregunna said she had plenty of help in her Good Samaritan efforts with "tons of volunteers, lots of donation offers, lots of offers to do delivery".

Hadley Junior High School and Philemon Wright High School in Gatineau also announced they would be closed on Monday due to tornado damage.

"It's heartbreaking to say the least", Ford told reporters Sunday afternoon.

All utilities say hundreds of their crews are working around the clock in order to restore power to all of their customers as soon as possible.

The Ontario government announced Saturday that it was activating the province's Disaster Recovery Assistance program in affected areas. He praised the non-partisan co-operation of the municipal, provincial and federal governments. They gathered their cats and dogs and ran for the basement, but just as they reached the door to the lower floor, the kitchen window imploded, sending glass flying to the front of the house.
