Metro PCS gets a new name and two new unlimited plans

There is one downside of being on the same network: When it's congested, T-Mobile customers get priority over Metro.

Tom Keys, president of Metro by T-Mobile, said the rebranding is an attempt to separate the old MetroPCS brand-which only offered CDMA service in roughly a dozen US cities before T-Mobile acquired it in 2013-from the new brand, which piggybacks on T-Mobile's LTE network. Metro added two new plans: For $50, users get unlimited data, 5GB of LTE mobile hotspot access and Google One.

T-Mobile has bolstered its own reputation in recent years, both by offering cost-cutting deals to customers and by improving its network technology.

And we're just getting started - this is just the first step in this Metro by T-Mobile journey. T-Mobile says theres a common misconception of prepaid networks in the USA market which are synonymous with crappy phones, limited coverage, and bad credit and it hopes that Metro will put these misconceptions to rest.

This type of phone plan is common in Europe, but has often played second fiddle in the U.S. Metro, however, has grown significantly since it merged with T-Mobile, from 8.8 million customers in 2013 to 18 million today. MetroPCS is becoming Metro by T-Mobile and introducing two new all-unlimited rate plans with tiers that include the many benefits of Amazon Prime and Google One. Additional lines can be added at $30 extra per line per month.

You can still opt for limited-data plans at $30 (2GB of LTE data) and $40 (10GB).

Peter Adderton, founder of Boost Mobile, said the rebranding does not change the fact that prepaid and postpaid are different markets, and he called for regulators to evaluate the merger's effect on them separately. Do you know someone these plans would be good for?

Today T-Mobile announced that they are rebranding their Metro PCS brand to Metro by T-Mobile. AT&T's equivalent self-branded plans don't offer any hotspot functionality unless you pay $75 per month; Cricket also caps speeds at 3Mbps.
