Waterways rise in South Carolina, residents told to leave

Florence is by no means done swamping the Carolinas, where rivers remain high above flood stage and thousands of people were told to plan to leave their homes Monday.

Parts of Georgetown could be submerged in up to 10 feet (3 meters) of floodwaters in the next few days as the Pee Dee and Waccamaw rivers overrun their banks, the National Weather Service said, adding that the deluge threatened to cut off highways and isolate communities.

About 160 km up the coast, a commercial section of downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Cape Fear River was under a foot of water, with flooding expected to rise by a further 2 feet with high tide on Sunday evening, city spokesman Dylan Lee said.

The county opened two emergency shelters on Monday, and hotels outside the flood zone in nearby Myrtle Beach were offering discounts for evacuees.

News outlets reports the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the body of 32-year-old Marcus Jamal Wiley was found by a landscaper who was cleaning up the area along US 117 south of Goldsboro on Monday.

A town in North Carolina found itself covered in dead fish as the aftermath from Hurricane Florence continues.

As Hurricane Florence barreled toward the North Carolina coast, Tammie Hedges made a decision to open a warehouse she had been remodeling to house pets displaced by the storm.

Power outages and the number of people in shelters were also declining.

The proposal would be part of broader disaster funding legislation the General Assembly will consider in an anticipated special session.

There's an ongoing disagreement about the levels of coal ash in the river near Wilmington, North Carolina.

"There will not be an official evacuation order", he said, but said people in the flood zone need to get out before the waters come.

Many residents got emotional talking about how the flooding affected them.

Georgetown County is opening two shelters for those who evacuate.

"We are still getting phone calls from people who don't know what is going on", said Georgetown County Emergency Management Director Sam Hodge.
