The 26-year-old was previously nominated among the final three for the "UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award" and "The Best FIFA Men's Player", but lost both trophies to Modric.

The Juventus forward, now facing allegations of rape dating back to 2009 that he strenuously denies, has already won the Ballon d'Or five times and is the current holder of the award.

For a while the award was combined with world football's governing body FIFA's Best Award, but the association was cut off in September 2016.

The victor of the prestigious award organised by France Football magazine will be announced on December 3.

In total, over 220,000 people have made their feelings known in the poll, and rather surprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo sits in third with just 5%, despite winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, among other feats.

There were seven Frenchmen named on the list after helping Les Bleus win their second World Cup in Russian Federation this summer.

Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, two key members of the France national team that sailed to their second-ever World Cup trophy are also likely to finish with high tallies, as are Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, members of Belgium's star-studded side that came third at Russian Federation 2018.

Saul also defended Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who was booed by fans earlier this season.

Men's shortlist so far: are Sergio Aguero from Argentina, Manchester City; Alisson Becker from Brazil, Liverpool; Gareth Bale from Wales, Real Madrid; Karim Benzema from France, Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappe, the Paris Saint-Germain striker who burst onto the global scene with his performances as France won the World Cup, is the favourite.

Sergio Aguero has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or.
