Banksy stunt may wind up making painting more valuable

So it's not entirely surprising that one of his most famous paintings, Girl With Balloon, selfdestructed after selling for more than $1.86 million at a Sotheby's auction in London. Presumably the frame shown in the video is the one that was holding "Girl With Balloon" on Friday, though it's worth noting that with Banksy, things are rarely exactly as they seem. It's become something else entirely: Now it's the only Girl with Balloon-and there are other copies that have sold at auction, not to mention the original, which Banksy spray-painted on an East London wall back in 2002-that has also been shredded. It is worth noting that while the painting was worth millions in the bid, Banksy would not have gotten a single cent since it was an auction resale, not that Banksy would have wanted a piece of the cake, though. Cheers to Banksy, for another headline-stealing prank, thus taking the art world to the bank once more!

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed", Senior Director and Head of Contemporary Art Alex Branczik said. The video then cuts to a final annotation, "In case it was ever put up for auction".

Acoris Andipa, an art dealer and Banksy specialist, described the stunning shredding as "spectacularly staged" and a "brilliant comment on the art market". But when the Dismaland website crashed in response to high ticket demand, the disappointment lived up to the "bemusement" park's name when people were convinced it was all part of his art.

"The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the 1.02 million pounds they paid last night", he said.

Geneva-based artist Pierre Koukjian, who was at the auction, said the buyer was "very lucky" to own a now-historic piece.

He has also done other stunts to send a message such as artwork of a dove with sniper mark criticizing the Palestine-Iranian conflict and other art mocking Europe's response to the migrant crisis, privilege, and celebrity culture.

Banksy is not the first artist to deconstruct his own work.

"We are busy figuring out what this means in an auction context ..."

BANKSY'S identity is one of the biggest mysteries in Britain - so who is the mysterious street artists behind the latest Girl With Balloon stunt?
