‘Embarrassing’: Yanks routed by Red Sox 16-1, trail ALDS 2-1

He jumped on the first pitch, a knuckleball from Tim Wakefield that didn't move enough, and smashed it into the left-field stands for a walk-off home run that sent the Yankees to the World Series.

It's a new phenomenon for numerous young players on the Yankees, who only have the last two seasons, and maybe the 2015 Wild Card Game, to draw on.

He already had Lance Lynn warming up, yet Boone and Rothschild chose to have Severino "try and steal a couple of outs" against the bottom of the Sox lineup in the fourth inning, wanting Lynn ready to face Boston's right-handed hitters at the top of the order.

It was clear from the end of the second inning - maybe even the first - that Severino did not have it when he took the mound to face the Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Boston scored its initial run on a groundout by Christian Vazquez in the bottom of the second inning. The big lefty was ejected from his last regular-season outing for hitting Tampa Bay catcher Jesus Sucre with a pitch during a testy game between division rivals on September 27. The Astros won two out of three at Fenway in early September.

"Major League Baseball needs to do something about Angel", Martinez said. It certainly wouldn't be smart for Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia to plunk a guy on objective and risk getting ejected. He is 38 years old and he wants to come back and pitch again next year for a 19 season.

After that ejection, Kinsler said, "I don't know how, for as many years he's been in the league, that he can be that bad". They take a lot of pitches.

But despite the sheer volume of bets that is hitting this game, it's still unclear which team is going to be the more popular pick.

David Price was again available in the bullpen for Game 4. And he very well might do okay.

Ortiz went 6-for-12 in the first three games of the ALCS, but his Red Sox lost all three games. That means J.A. Happ too. "Obviously you don't go into the game expecting to make history or do anything like that. let alone score 16 runs against a good New York Yankees team". (This was Manny being Manny, only Mookie). "It was loud and had a good atmosphere back then, but I think just starting with last year's Wild Card Game, there was a different buzz". It never really works.

Or Brock Holt making that play at second base off Brett Gardner in the third when the game was still a game. "I need a home run for a cycle, '" Holt said. "This is one I'll remember for a long time and hopefully we can carry this over to tomorrow". Of course this human error doesn't really matter to the outcome, beyond prolonging the Yankees agony. They also drew some criticism for breaking some of the game's many "unwritten rules" in the process. He is slated to be the home plate umpire Tuesday night as the Yankees look to stave off elimination in Game 4 of the ALDS.

Yes, Game 4 of the last division series left standing, in the Bronx on an October night, where so much has happened, and so much might happen. As Boston starter Rick Porcello, said, wielding a cliché as expertly as one of his go-to sliders: "This is what it's all about".
