The whole Kavanaugh hearing has been deeply disappointing, but at least his name will keep the discussion of sexual assault alive. "It is not a partisan or political institution", said Kavanaugh, who was to take up his seat on the nine-member bench on October 9.

Biskupic described the scene as Kavanaugh listened to arguments for the first time and the significance of hearing him addressed by his new title.

In the survey of 1,000 likely USA voters, 54 percent of respondents said they thought the Senate had enough information at the time to decide whether or not to confirm Kavanaugh.

The president-whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress-predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations.

The latest justice to join the bench, Neil Gorsuch, spoke a year ago during his swearing-in at the White House Rose Garden.

Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate on Saturday, earning 50 "yes" votes - the fewest for any Supreme Court justice in the modern era.

Kavanaugh's nomination as a replacement for retired justice Anthony Kennedy - long seen as a key swing vote - was controversial from the start. That evening, he took his oaths of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court while protesters chanted outside the court building.

His remarks on Murkowski were part of a wide-ranging interview in which McConnell acknowledged that the extended fight over confirming Kavanaugh has widened an existing gender gap in which Republicans trail Democrats in support among women. "I am eager to see E15 sales continue to grow with this long awaited announcement", said Gov. Kim Reynolds in a statement released Monday.

The high court now has five conservative justices and four liberals.

The White House event was purely ceremonial.

Democrats plan to force a vote Wednesday morning on a bill related to health care coverage of pre-existing conditions and the size and scope of insurance plans, the latest action from the minority party's push to focus on the issue of health care going into the midterms.

"They want to turn America, these Democrats...into a giant sanctuary for criminal aliens and the MS-13 killers that we're getting out of the country by the way by the thousands", he said.
