Kyrgios' latest round of unsportsmanlike antics took place Monday night at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, where the world's number 38 player suffered a stunning defeat to his 104th-ranked American opponent, Bradley Kahn.

"I think it's really up to him where he wants to go and what his potential really holds". Dumusois then underlined to Kyrgios what he exactly meant: "You know exactly what I meant, Nick".

At last year's tournament, Kyrgios smashed two balls out of court in frustration and stormed off midway through his match with Steve Johnson in the first round.

"You have no right to tell me that it's poor".

Klahn hit an ace to go 2-1 up in the second set - chair umpire Dumusois wasn't pleased with Kyrgios' effort on the return - which led to him saying the Australian at the changeover: "Nick - last point was really borderline".

Coric, seeded 13th, will next face American qualifier Bradley Klahn, who claimed a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Nick Kyrgios.

The Shanghai Masters has been a particularly unhappy hunting ground for Kyrgios over the years, with this being the fourth year in a row that he has stoked controversy at the competition.

Federer has chosen not to partake in the Shanghai Masters this year.

"I want to help you", chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani told Kyrgios, who went on to capture 19 of the next 25 games and set up a clash against Federer in NY.

Lahyani was suspended from his next two scheduled tournaments after trying to encourage Kyrgios during a match at the US Open.

Kyrgios has been toppled as Australia's number one player with 19-year-old Alex de Minaur moving up to 33 in the world to take top spot for the first time in his career.

He said Kyrgios looked "tired and jaded" at this stage in the season and that brings out the worst in him. "There's a way of playing tennis on a tennis court".

"I think we're two very different characters", said Kyrgios following his loss to the Swiss at the US Open.
