Google Home app updated in time for stronger smart home push

Other lights, like Sengled's smart bulbs and those from Philips Hue require you to use their own Hub to connect the lights to, and then you connect that to your other smart home gear like the Home Mini or Echo Dot. First announced back at CES 2018, Google's new product category was seen as a way to bring visual responses to the Assistant.

Bottom line: Pre-ordering a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL from Google will no longer get it to you on day one. "We would have easily given the third-parties Cast if they wanted it, but I think most developers are comfortable using Android Things". We already know that Google's offering features a swipe-down gesture that brings up a "home view" control panel that now isn't found on the third-party devices.

All previous "smart displays" with Google Assistant are almost identical under the hood.

One other pretty significant difference between the Home Hub and other Smart Displays is what's found under the hood. It also allows users to check on all compatible smart devices even when they're away from home, and the new multi-user support allows everyone under the same roof to control smart devices in the house via the Google Home app. Of course, you can still use voice controls as well. Side-stepping any potential mishaps that could come along with an internet-connected camera feels like the right decision. In fact, if you have the most recent version of the Google Home mobile app, you can see this for yourself because the interface is cohesive between phones, tablets, and the Google Home Hub. All they need is to have the new Google Home app installed and you can all live the convenient, smart home lifestyle.

There's also better integration with Google's Nest products. As more pictures of those people are added, Google will dynamically update the album on the Home Hub. JBL and Lenovo's attempts at this have been solid, but now it's Google's turn. The idea is to remove what Google calls the "billboard effect" where your eyes are drawn to the brightness of the display in a dim room.

"Essentially the Home Hub is a 7" tablet flipped over (with [a huge] bezel) attached to a stand with speaker", Goetz said.

The smart home consumer at-large however just wants a clean, simple way to interact with the devices they have.
