The quake hit about 200km (125 miles) southwest of the town of Rabaul at a depth of nearly 40km, just before 7 am local time (2100 GMT Wednesday).

Speaking by phone from Rabaul police station, Constable Roy Michael said he felt the quake but "it was not too strong".

Tsunami waves are forecast to be about a foot above the tide level along the coasts of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

A major 7.0-magnitude quake struck Papua New Guinea's New Britain island on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning.

He added there was no damage in Rabaul, but officers were still waiting to hear from villages closer to the epicentre.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that hazardous waves were possible on coasts within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter.

A strong aftershock followed a major magnitude 7.0 natural disaster that struck off the southeastern coast of Papua New Guinea.

Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk.

Scientists don't have tide gauges close to the where the quake happened and weren't able to say whether any tsunamis were generated.

A magnitude 6.4 natural disaster struck the northeastern coast of East Java shortly before 3am, with local news reports stating three people have been killed by collapsing buildings.

He says areas farther away are unlikely to be affected because of the quake isn't "terribly large" and many are shielded by land masses and islands.

A magnitude 6.2 aftershock was recorded over an hour after the original quake struck, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

PNG sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

The strong quake was felt in Denpasar on the holiday island of Bali, where panicked people fled from buildings.

Some tourists and residents ducked outdoors as a precaution but then went back to sleep when there was no tsunami warning. Officials say more than 80,000 people are living in temporary shelters or otherwise displaced.
