Michael downgraded to tropical storm, but still packing a punch

The winds were so strong they brought down a billboard in Florida's Panama City, tore down a Texaco gas pumping station canopy in Inlet Beach, and the storm surge completely knocked a house of its foundations in Mexico Beach.

Hurricane Michael, the fiercest storm to hit Florida in more than 80 years and the third-most powerful ever to strike the USA mainland, battered the state's Gulf coast on Wednesday with roof-shredding winds, raging surf and torrential rains.

The National Hurricane Centre said: "On the forecast track, the core of Michael will move across central and eastern Georgia this morning, and then over southern and central SC later today".

And some roads may also be blocked by downed power lines.

Meteorologists said it had the potential to become one of the worst storms in the history of the region as they watched satellite imagery in complete awe while the storm intensified.

"We're going to do everything we can and send people out to keep people safe".

Michael was downgraded to a tropical storm as it raced across Georgia late Wednesday night.

The Carolinas are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, which left dozens dead and is estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage last month.

Without power, the city was plunged into darkness at nightfall and its flooded streets were mostly silent and devoid of people or traffic.

As of 5 p.m. EDT, Michael is still a Category 3 major hurricane with its peak winds measuring 125 miles per hour. Wind damage was also evident.
