The latter is the main love interest for Cavill's character, Geralt of Rivia, while the former is a princess in the important kingdom of Cintra. The two join a cast headed up by Henry Cavill (Mission Impossible: Fallout), who plays the witcher himself, Geralt of Rivia.

Rounding out the rest of the cast are Jodhi May (Game of Thrones, Genius) as Queen Calanthe; Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as her husband, the knight Eist; Adam Levy (Knightfall, Snatch) as the druid Mousesack; MyAnna Buring as the head of the magical academy at Aretuza, Tissaia; Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers; and Millie Brady as the outcast Princess Renfri. Though the books do mention one line regarding her "pale skin" and ashen hair, other fans are just excited to see Ciri come to life in another medium. A casting notice noted the producers were looking for an actress of color to play the young princess, leading to backlash.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Marvel's Daredevil, The Umbrella Academy) serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the series, which was announced a year ago. From the beginning, they have only looked to cast the best actors for a given role. The love here is wonderful, and the hate is enlightening, like a real-life Trial of the Grasses, except I HAVE to read less and write more - or we won't have a damn finale. And most importantly, who's going to play Roach, Geralt's trusty horse? "Be nice to each other, okay?"

Hissrich discussed with THR the process behind casting Allan and Chalotra for The Witcher, sharing that she didn't make a point to cast lesser-known stars and that "200 young women from all over Europe" auditioned for the role of Ciri. I'm a huge fan of the games. I get it. When I read my favorite books I certainly imagine characters a certain way. We met in early April and had a very general meeting.

In an interview with THR, Hissrich spoke about the casting process, saying "There were some people who I had in mind from the minute I started writing this character and then there were other characters - Ciri is the flawless example - that take a really exhaustive search".

We'll bring you more on Netflix's plans for The Witcher as we learn them.
