Alexa, Dolby Vision, and more

Microsoft has been teasing their return for months, but on Thursday, the company announced they are rolling out now as part of the October dashboard update.

It's quite depressing to think that all of these commands used to be natively processed by the Xbox One via Kinect, which Microsoft took out back when it turned out to be a massive flop, only to bring all these features back with longer and more convoluted command phrases via Alexa and Cortana. To set up Alexa, say, "Alexa, open Xbox".

Beyond that, a big new feature is the Xbox Skill for Cortana and Alexa, allowing for interoperability between the two. It just goes to show how much Microsoft really cares about Cortana. Remember, Windows 10 runs on thousands of different configurations, while Xbox One consists of just three.

The new avatars include a lot of neat options previously not included, like prosthetic limbs and mobility aids, which allow them to represent a wider range of players more accurately. Microsoft is not removing the old Avatar system now. In addition to all the items that are available at launch, there is also a new Avatar Store where you can obtain even more new Avatar items, including licensed designs from Halo, Gears of War, and more.

These new updates are immensely powerful, with more than 16 million color options for nearly all the Avatar items. You can still use your Xbox Original Avatar, according to Microsoft, which is still an option, if the new Avatar system isn't appealing to you.

Dolby Vision HDR video streaming has been implemented as well, supported on Netflix with a premium subscription. Dolby Vision support delivers enhanced HDR and dynamic scene-by-scene precision, with highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker.

The update is now rolling out to Xbox One owners worldwide and includes a number of new features, such as new Xbox Avatars, and support for five new languages within the Narrator tool. Keep in mind the new Xbox Skill is only available for users in the United States, so if you are outside of the U.S., you are only getting the new Xbox Avatars, Dolby Vision streaming, and new langauges for Narrator.
