"The Belgian attacker [Hazard] is a great player and could be a very good option for his "dream club" Real Madrid in the next transfer window", Rivaldo told Betfair.

Asked on Thursday whether he needed to play in Spain to win the Ballon d'Or, awarded annually to the world's best player, a smiling Hazard responded: "That's why I want to go, maybe".

After a storming September, Hazard has been awarded the Premier League player of the month award, and few could argue that he doesn't deserve it.

Incredibly, Hazard also has the joint second most assists for the season with three and these statistics have recently bought comparisons of the Belgian with the best players in the world such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Hazard has been in scintillating form for Chelsea this season and is the Premier League's top scorer with seven goals. I could say [Madrid and France defender Raphael] Varane because he won a lot too.

"But seriously, I think that Modric will win it".

Modric is the favourite after winning the Federation Internationale de Football Association gong for the men's player of the year.

Ronaldo was the last player from outside of Spain to win the award when he was at Manchester United in 2008.

A panel of journalists select the Ballon d'Or victor which was first established in 1956 and will this year feature a women's award for the first time.

Sir Stanley Matthews won the first Ballon d'Or in 1956.
