Sources tell Variety that Coogler is on board to write and direct the sequel to the hit superhero tentpole "Black Panther".

Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed 2, Space Jam) is returning to Wakanda as the writer and director has signed on for the Black Panther sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Chadwick Boseman is expected to return in the starring role, as are others in the A-list ensemble. The plan is for Coogler to commence writing the script early next year, so they can start the production later in '19, early 2020 at the latest.

However, when it comes to potential Oscar glory, Disney have made a decision to back just one of these horses, and have put Black Panther forward for Best Picture consideration.

A release date has not been set yet and plot details have yet to be revealed.

"Black Panther" earlier this year grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, including $700 million domestically - a new record for a Marvel release. As Hollywood Reporter indicated, filmmakers are often drawn into contract negotiations as soon as a film is deemed lucrative, but in the case of Coogler and his creative staff, waited until they were met with ideal terms. Perhaps Killmonger could return stronger (and angrier) than ever, or maybe Kraven the Hunter will take a break from terrorizing Spider-Man to prey on Black Panther.

With T'Challa having fallen victim to Thanos' deadly finger-snap, Black Panther 2 remains in a curious position with no one now holding the mantle of Black Panther, though the events of Avengers 4 will likely have a large impact on the plot direction of the film.
