Djokovic outguns Anderson in Shanghai

The pair will battle it out for a place in the Shanghai Masters final when they come to blows on Saturday, where the victor will face either Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.

The 20-time Grand Slam victor and reigning champion Federer plays 13th seed Borna Coric of Croatia in Saturday's other semi-final.

For this first match, Djokovic is a solid [1.37] favourite to make the final, and rather surprisingly for two top-five players, they've only had one previous meeting, which Zverev took on the clay in Rome past year without facing a single break point.

Edmund was bidding to reach his first Masters semi-final but a couple of forehand errors gifted Zverev a break in the opening game.

Zverev needed only one opportunity to break his opponent in either set as he became the fifth player to book his place at the season-ending ATP Finals in London.

Federer held off a late charge from the Japanese to take the opener before recovering from a 4-1 deficit in the second set tiebreak to seal victory. Coric beat Federer in the Halle final in their last meeting earlier this year.

The 37-year-old will next face Croatian power-hitter Borna Coric, who dumped Australia's Matthew Ebden out of the tournament 7-5 6-4.

Tomorrow's conditions - a rather quick hard court - is somewhat different, and I feel that their one and only head to head clash has zero relevance towards this match-up.

"But also, he has improved a lot, and he has established himself as a top player".

Djokovic did not give the world number eight a look-in, serving with power and precision and returning with vigour to remain in the hunt for a fourth title of the season.

"I don't even know if I'm going to play the tour next year, I haven't talked to Stan (Wawrinka), nor Severin (Luthi), but I sincerely doubt he's going to play".

After the match, Coric shared his happiness with the win: 'It has been a great year, ' the 21-year-old said.
