Ryder Cup: Lee Westwood backs Padraig Harrington for 2020 European captaincy

"Hopefully it sparks up this week and I can get some good mojo going", said Dunne, who has missed four of his last five cuts and nine from 21 this year.

Westwood will be 47 by the time of the 2020 Ryder Cup but has not given up hope of equalling Nick Faldo's record of 11 appearances in the event as a player.

The 45-year-old also told Sky Sports News that he felt three-time major victor Harrington was the "perfect candidate" and better equipped to lead Europe's attempt to retain the trophy won in convincing style at Le Golf National, where both he and Harrington were vice-captains.

The three-time major victor said during last week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship that he felt a "right fit" for this particular captaincy and the path to that post has been left clear by Lee Westwood saying in the wake of the victory in France that he is happy to wait until the 2022 match in Italy before throwing his hat into the ring.

Koepka became the first player since Curtis Strange in 1989 to win back-to-back US Open in New Jersey before holding off a rejuvenated Tiger Woods to win a third major title in his last six starts in St Louis.

"I won't put my name forward for this one".

That means the selection panel - which comprises the three immediate past captains in Bjorn, Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke, as well as European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley and an as yet unnamed member of the Players Committee - will be presented with one of the most straightforward decisions in the history of the Cup when it sits in December.

"And then you've got (Lee) Westwood. I think the continuity in the European camp having all these vice captains this year and preparing for captaincy down the road has been a huge foundation of why we've been so good".

Harrington has served as a vice captain on the 2014, 2016 and 2018 European teams.

It is now understood that Westwood would prefer to wait until Rome 2022 to take up any leadership opportunities that may lay in wait. "That would be great, I'd very keen on doing it there [in 2022]". "I can see why a double appointment would work if that was considered the best way to proceed", explained Bjorn.

Steve Stricker is the presumed frontrunner on the US side to be captain in his home state of Wisconsin.
