United Kingdom companies can't afford to ignore mental health issues

Authors of a new report published yesterday in The Lancet to mark the World Mental Health Day (WMHD), revealed that depression and anxiety were on the rise in all countries of the world.

"Children and adolescents with mental health disorders often face stigma and limited access to health care and education in violation of their human rights".

'We want to bring attention to the issues our youth and young adults are facing in our world today and begin the conversation around what they need in order to grow up healthy, happy and resilient, ' writes the World Federation for Mental Health.

It is important for the patients as well as for the people surrounding the sufferer, to understand that mental illness is a disease of the brain, just like pancreatitis or liver disease.

She said a team of health professionals, consisting of a psychiatrist, nurses, counsellors and support staff manage more than 300 persons, who are listed on its register. He further said that the psychiatrists in government cadre are available in each district hospital of State and soon, more psychiatrists would be recruited to provide mental health services at rural area of the State.

The public spending watchdog also warned that the number of young people with a mental health condition is likely to be higher than previously estimated, which will make Government ambitions harder to realise. "But I truly believe that secrets keep you sick", she said at a fundraiser in California.

The Government has also reasserted its commitment to tackling mental health among young people.

She said: "In my time as Health Minister I have met many people who have been bereaved by suicide and their stories of pain and loss will stay with me for a long time".

UK Sport's strategy will be led by a new head of medical health - an appointment is imminent - and they will be guided by a new mental health expert panel, which is expected to feature four psychiatrists and psychologists, all with experience of high-performance sport.
