The National Alliance on Mental Illness Northern Illinois rallied at Veterans Memorial Hall to recognize the final day of Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Despite this alarming scenario, mental health continues to be a taboo topic with vast stigma attached to it.


Matt Hancock, the health secretary, acknowledged Wednesday that mental health services had been short of resources as he began a new initiative to put mental health on an equal footing with physical health.

"We can't tackle mental health stigma if we're avoiding talking about mental health to start with".

A newly formed local nonprofit organization called Hope Family Village is working to create a community-centric collaborative offering acceptance, housing and sustainable support for people with mental health conditions and their families.

"We are challenging negative phrases people with mental ill health find hurtful or harsh because they suggest they're helpless, pitying, or are even used abusively".

NAMI hosts several support groups and educational courses each month to help reduce the stigma around mental illness.
