Internet to shut down globally over next 48 hours?

"All arrangements are in place and there will be no internet shut down in India as is being circulated in the media", Rai told news channel NDTV. However, to avoid its effect, you can enable System Security Extensions.

The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to change the cryptographic key which protects the DNS (Domain Name System). This has been necessitated to counter the rising incidents of cyber attacks, ICANN said. There have been only a small handful of reports of issues suspected to be caused by the rollover.

If all of the user's resolvers are not prepared for the rollover (such as if they are all managed by one organization and that organization has not made any of their resolvers ready), the user will start seeing failure sometime in the 48 hours after the rollover.

Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's identical of a phone book. "This is an important move and we have an obligation to ensure that it happens in furtherance of ICANN's mission, which is to ensure a secure, stable and resilient DNS" said ICANN Board Chair Cherine Chalaby. This might decrease DNS resolution as their system maintains attempting the resolver that is not prepared before switching over to the resolver that is prepared, but the individual will still get Domain Name System (DNS) resolution and might not also see the downturn, ICANN press note stated. This so-called root KSK rollover from the 2010 KSK to the 2017 KSK was supposed to take place nearly a year ago but was delayed until October 11 of this year because of concerns it might disrupt internet connectivity to significant numbers of web users. But so far that hasn't happened.ICANN wrote: "The root KSK rollover has occurred: the new root zone signed by new KSK (known as KSK-2017) has been published to the root servers".

Also, users could face inconvenience accessing the global network if they used an outdated ISP, reported NDTV. But certainly, it will be down in batches, and you may encounter problems while surfing certain websites and web-based services.
