This has been a disastrous start to the campaign from our players and our manager Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils find themselves down in 8th place after eight games, and a sizeable seven points adrift of rivals Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool, who lead the way at October's worldwide break. It's definitely not the case, ' the former midfielder told Sky Sports. It's too easy to throw out a player is not trying.

"The lads are human beings who make mistakes".

Mourinho will head to his former stomping ground once the global break is over, with a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea when the Premier League campaign resumes.

Carrick spent over a decade patrolling United's midfield before moving into a coaching position under Mourinho, and he is thoroughly enjoying his new role.

He said of the man at the Old Trafford helm: "He's been fantastic with me".

"The situation I'm in at the moment, my first job after being a player so there's a huge element of learning and trying to soak up as much as I can to improve myself".

"He's been great with me".

United legend Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to have given the 51-year-old his backing, as the pressure continues to mount on Mourinho.

David Moyes was the first to fail in that task, with Carrick admitting that the Scot inherited an nearly impossible job. We have more than enough quality at the club.

Mourinho will be looking to get the better of Maurizio Sarri this weekend but before the game, why not try out our 10-part quiz to discover how much you really know about the two clubs?
