Matthews scores 2 and helps Maple Leafs beat Red Wings 5-3

Matthews and Tavares are just the third set of teammates in league history, and the first in 101 years, to each pot six-plus goals in their team's first four games of a season.

This marks Toronto's only regular-season trip to Dallas and is game two of a four-game road trip that will also take the Maple Leafs to Detroit on Thursday and Washington on Saturday to face the Stanley Cup champion Capitals. After upgrading in the offseason, the Maple Leafs want to be even better regardless of where they play this season.

If you ask me, the decision to put John Tavares, Morgan Rielly and three centremen on the team's top power play unit is looking pretty smart right about now.

"When it's going in, it's always a really good feeling", Matthews said Tuesday.

The Maple Leafs would like these guys to lead but they need more help from the supporting cast. "We are all very comfortable with one another and I think that's just a good environment to be in for a player".

Toronto was 2 for 3 on the power play.

First-year Stars coach Jim Montgomery is pleased with his team's performance thus far but remains ever vigilant for complacency creeping into their game. "You know 3-4 minutes to go there we make a real good push and (Andersen) makes a number of saves and the puck stays out of the net".

You've seen them play on the ice, now is your chance to them play in the virtual world. Radulov scored for the third straight game, and Jamie Benn scored his third power-play goal.

The Maple Leafs tied it at 3:30 of the second period when Kapanen deflected Ron Hainsey's shot from the left point through a crowd and past Holtby.

"I really liked our first two periods", Reirden said, "keeping a risky hockey team to some limited chances". He's only needed 17 shots to score his nine goals. Connor Brown added an empty-net goal at 16:40.

Rielly arrived in the National Hockey League with the "offensive defenceman" label when he was drafted fifth overall by the Leafs in 2012 and enjoyed his best season previous year by registering a career-high 52 points.

Tavares and Matthews have scored 13 goals between them to start the season, while the rest of the Leafs combined have scored seven.

Toronto has relied heavily on its top scorers through its first three games.

Matthews is the sixth in franchise history to score at least once in each of the first four games of a season, joining Corb Denneny (1921-22) and Babe Dye (1925-26) of the Toronto St. Patricks, as well as Schriner, John Anderson (1981-82) and Clarke MacArthur (2010-11).

Allen, who blocked 46 shots, was one the few players Blues coach Mike Yeo would praise.
