The first of a few confirmed cases in the area was reported in the last couple of weeks, but there is no large increase in cases at this time, said Chris Steward of Sedgwick County's Division of Health.

The department said 125,000 people received the flu shot a year ago through the province's publicly funded vaccination program.

As flu clinics opened around Alberta Monday morning, a new survey suggests a little over half of Edmonton residents plan to get a flu shot this year. Some are hospitalized and some die.

The Department of Health and Community Services said the number of clinics will increase this year to help improve public access to the vaccine. "Even if you are in good health, it's important to get immunized to prevent the spread of illness to high-risk individuals such as newborns, young children, pregnant women, and adults with chronic medical conditions", McGrath said. In Kansas, 193 deaths statewide were directly attributed to the flu.

There have been difficulties this year with the flu vaccination.

Flu vaccinations are recommended for anyone six months and older, unless otherwise directed by a physician.

While the Health Department expects its shipment of the flu mist to arrive in the next week or so, the flu shot is in stock and available.

Symptoms of the flu start suddenly and include fever that lasts 3-4 days, body aches, chills, tiredness, cough, and headache. A sliding fee scale down to $2 may be applied for uninsured children age 18 and younger with proof of income.
