The Kindle Paperwhite is ready for the bath

Just in time for summer, Amazon today announced a new version of its Kindle Paperwhite that adds waterproofing.

Speaking of durability, as we mentioned earlier the Paperwhite now follows the more expensive Kindle Oasis with a water-resistant design. It's still a black slab, but now it's just 8.18mm thick and weighs just 6.4 ounces.

Amazon says the update will arrive over-the-air in the next few weeks to Kindle Paperwhites from 2013 and newer devices.

Amazon says the waterproofing means you can now enjoy your Kindle Paperwhite in the bath or on the beach, and the soft, grippable material found on the rear means that it should not slip from your grasp.

The new home experience makes it easier to find your next read based on your reading history and with Paperwhite featuring Bluetooth connectivity you can link it straight to a speaker and listen to all your Audible books. Now, the newest Paperwhite appears to be a mix of the old model and the now-defunct Kindle Voyage (the latter disappeared from Amazon's site about a month ago). When a user buys either the Kindle or Audible version of a book, Whispersync lets them buy the accompanying e-book or audiobook at a discounted price.

Storage wise, this new version of the Paperwhite comes in both 8GB and 32GB variants, which is a substantial step above the e-reader's current 4GB of internal storage. You know, in case you like reading on something that has a battery that lasts longer than Luke Skywalker's Jedi training.

The new 2018 Kindle Paperwhite is the second Amazon e-ink device to be given the water resistance treatment following the launch of the Rolls Royce of e-readers, the £230 Oasis, in 2017.

If you've wanted to take your Paperwhite into the hot tub, now you can.

Other features include the ability to easily personalise your reading experience with a simple tap changing the settings, font and type size to how you like it. Maybe the best feature for fans of reading at the pool or beach is the fact that the new Paperwhite is waterproof.

The all-new Kindle Paperwhite prices start from £119.99 for the 8 GB model and £149.99 for the 32 GB model. For the voracious reader that needs instant access to new books even when WiFi is unavailable, the 32GB Paperwhite with a free cellular connection is $249.99. The 8GB models will ship starting November 7, with the higher storage models shipping sometime in the coming months.
