First up in a live-action/animation hybrid picture is Tom and Jerry, followed by an animated Scooby-Doo movie.

Warner Animation Group (WAG) is trying to increase its animated productions after the success of The LEGO Movie. The studio is aware of the history of the characters and wants to give them as much attention as DC and Harry Potter. Well, Warner Bros. sure hopes you do, because they're banking on it. According to a report by Variety, the studio has brought in top-tier talents Tim Story and Chris Columbus to guide Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo to the big screen. Story is coming off of wrapping production on New Line's Shaft, opening next summer, and was reportedly enthusiastic about taking on the famous cat-and-mouse pairing. Variety reports "that since Tom and Jerry didn't speak and relied on physical comedy to draw laughs, this version will stick to that style and not cast actors to voice the duo".

Terence Nance will direct the motion picture, which is expected to be released next year.

Story is now working on his Shaft sequel/reboot, so the film isn't expected to go into production until at least next summer - with a late 2020 release already pencilled in.

The other major live-action sequel that's expected to hit theatres next year is a Space Jam sequel featuring NBA basketball player LeBron James. The Harry Potter director's interest in the popular animated series about those "blasted, meddling kids and their dog" peaked while he was working on the Gremlins reboot, which he is producing. He'll work with Tony Cervone who directs from Kelly Fremon Craig's screenplay, adapted from Jack Donaldson and Derek Elliott's previous draft. And that's not all: there's a Jetsons movie being made by Matt Lieberman and Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon, and a new Flintstones film as well. Should the studio's resurgent efforts prove fruitful, they might just go the Disney/Marvel route and dig a little deeper into their archives to find some truly interesting adaptations that have been waiting for the right creative team to come along.
