The problem is that many parents are choosing not to vaccinate their kids because of misinformation about the flu shot. Dr. Maxwell said avoiding the shot puts you at greater risk of getting other illnesses.

"After extensive studies, we know that the flu vaccine is safe", said Moorjani.

Starting October 15, all Albertans older than six months were able to receive the flu vaccine free of charge through Alberta Health Services (AHS) locations and qualifying pharmacists and physician offices.

Regional health authorities will begin to host public flu shot clinics starting October 22, including at community health offices.

The Maryland Department of Health announced the first confirmed cases of the flu Tuesday, an adult and child in Central Maryland and the Eastern Shore. "We see every year, that people succumb to this vaccine preventable illness".

Making it the deadliest season in more than four decades.

For more information on scheduled clinic locations, people can visit the website of their regional health authority or call 811.

"It takes time for your body to get strong and ready for flu season, which is why we recommend everybody get the shot as soon as they can. It's not a suppressed virus, so it can not technically give you influenza", Fristo said. For example, 30-percent of parents believe the flu shot is a conspiracy and nearly as many believe that it causes autism.

"Researchers also found more than 80 percent of pregnancies "overlapped with flu season", a finding which "[underscored] the likelihood that pregnant women will be exposed to flu at some point during their pregnancy", the CDC said.

Health professionals say it's time to get a flu vaccine.

Health officials say Kansas has recorded its first flu deaths of the season.

St. Luke's Medical Group said they have enough flu shots, but they're ordering more just in case.
