During the Mate 20 launch in London today, Huawei's "One More Thing" moment was the unveiling of the Mate 20 X. The fourth device in the new lineup is a big-screened premium device with gaming capabilities rivalling not only the Razer Phone 2, but also the Nintendo Switch.

"The Huawei Mate 20 Series is created to be the best "mate" of consumers, accompanying and empowering them to enjoy a richer, more fulfilled life with their higher intelligence, unparalleled battery lives and powerful camera performance", said Richard Yu, company CEO. For imaging duties, Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a triple rear camera setup of a 40-megapixel wide angle sensor (f/1.8 aperture), a 20-megapixel ultra wide sensor and (f/2.2 aperture), and an 8-megapixel sensor which is 3X telephoto lens. Here are the highlights, in 60 seconds.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Series comes with EMUI 9.0, a smart operating system based on Android P. However, with the industry moving away from fingerprint security - Apple ditched it entirely for the iPhone X - this addition is unlikely to sway too many buyers. But we had no idea what this gaming phone would have to offer.

Wood said Huawei's move to match Apple iPhone's characteristic swipe gestures and face unlock features on its Mate 20 Pro could, in theory, make it easier for committed Apple buyers to switch, although he said that was unlikely near term.

After walking through the device's display, design, and battery life, Yu began discussing how much better mobile games are on the device comparing it to other phones like the Galaxy Note9. It can also only connect to one of Huawei's optional gamepads (the company's idea of Joy-Cons), meaning players will always have to use touch-screen controls in some capacity. As for the Mate 20 X, it is priced at RM 3199 although this particular model will only be available in Malaysia starting from 11 November onwards. The lens are arrayed in the same great square layout as the other Mate 20 phones, and using that 7.2-inch screen to capture images is an absolute joy. Huawei's subsidiary Honor is set to launch the Honor Magic phone soon that would also be powered by the same chipset.

For Huawei's most powerful Mate 20 Pro, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of memory, it can be bought SIM free in Ireland for €1,049 in Harvey Norman (pre-order started on 16 October). It also supports a Note 9 S Pen-like stylus Huawei is calling the M Pen.

Huawei is pushing the gaming elements of the Mate 20 X hard, even offering Nintendo Switch-like accessories. You'll also get a free Huawei Watch GT and wireless charging Dock worth €249 with this purchase.
