"Let me just say on behalf of all of Montana, Mr. President, thank you for giving us hope again", Gianforte said, while at a rally in Missoula, Montana.

Trump's remarks at a rally in Montana come amid an global outcry over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist who has been missing since entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, whom the president has said is likely dead. Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on October 2 and Turkish media reports that an audio recording suggests Khashoggi was tortured and killed soon after entering the building before being dismembered.

On Biden challenging him to a fight, Trump said, "He'd be down, faster than Greg would take him down".

Gianforte was captured on an audio recording physically assaulting Ben Jacobs, a reporter for the Guardian newspaper.

President Trump praised Rep. The congressman later apologized for his actions and was sentenced to a 180-day deferred sentence, 40 hours of community service, 20 hours of anger management and a US$300 fine along with an $85 court fee.

"So I was in Rome with a lot of the leaders from other countries, talking about all sorts of things, when I heard about it", Trump said. I know Montana pretty well.

"The president of the United States tonight applauded the assault on an American journalist who works for the Guardian".

Gianforte initially told police that Jacobs instigated the attack but later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault after eyewitness statements and audiotapes showed that he had been lying.
