"I have returned home safely", METL Group quoted him as saying on its Twitter feed, without providing more details about how he was freed or got away from his captors. "I thank the authorities of Tanzania, including the Police Force for working for my safe return", Dewji said through a tweet by his company MeTL Group. "I thank all my fellow Tanzanians, and everyone around the world for their prayers", he said in a tweeted message.

The footage also showed a tired-looking Mohammed Dewji, in a tee-shirt and jogging pants, thanking the police.

"We got information that the abductors used the same vehicle that was used to seize him at the Colosseum Hotel and dumped him at gymkhana (sports facility) grounds", Dar es Salaam Regional Police Chief Lazaro Mambosasa said on Saturday.

Dewji's family had offered a reward of 1 billion Tanzania shillings ($440,000, €381,600) for any information leading to his release.

Kidnapped Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji has been released, 10 days after he was seized by armed men in the city of Dar Es Salaam.

"He could not identify the abductors throughout the period of captivity", commander Mambosasa said, adding that Mr Dewji was unharmed apart from bruises on his hands and feet where they were tied.

The METL Group specializes in a diverse range of industries across 11 African nations, boasting billions of dollars in revenue in the process.

Dewji was born in Tanzania and studied at Georgetown University in the United States.

In 2013, he became the first Tanzanian to grace the cover of Forbes magazine and was named Forbes Africa Person of the Year in 2015.

He said the kidnappers had abandoned Mr Dewji at a field near the Gymkhana club in Dar es Salam, Tanzania's commercial capital. Forbes estimates his net worth at US$1.5 billion (S$2.07 billion), making him Africa's 17th richest man and its youngest billionaire.

He is married with three children.

In 2016, the tycoon had promised to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes.
