'Free Willy' actor Jason James Richter arrested for domestic violence

The 38-year-old, who starred in the "Free Willy" film series as a child, was arrested Monday for misdemeanour domestic violence, the LAPD confirmed to ET.

TMZ reports that the now 38-year-old actor was arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence in San Fernando Valley, Calif. late Monday evening, October 15, 2018, following an alleged incident at home with his girlfriend.

According to law enforcement sources cited by the gossip rag, an argument between the two reportedly turned heated early Monday night after the former '90s star asked his girlfriend if she was cheating on him with a coworker.

It is claimed that his girlfriend told police she continued to lock herself in her bedroom, but was reportedly dragged by Jason to the living room after he managed to allegedly knock down the door.

He was released Wednesday on $20,000 bail.

Four hours later the girlfriend showed up at the police station and filed a report, claiming domestic violence.


Richter has been charged with one count of vandalism for the door and one count of "battery on a significant other with no physical injury".

If convicted, he faces up to a year behind bars.

He was discovered by a Japanese casting agency there as a youngster and was put up for TV spots before he eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to throw himself into the industry.

The Daily Mail reports that Richter landed the role in Free Willy after being chosen out of more than 4,000 young auditions.

In 1998 Jason stepped away from acting when he was just 18, instead turning his focus towards music. Aside from one role opposite Kate Hudson in 2001's Ricochet River would be almost 10 years before he returned to the screen. In 2009, he acted in Tekken and appeared on the TV show Bones.

He had seven projects slated for 2018, including the horror movie Ghost in the Graveyard and the thriller Driver. We're told Richter broke the door down to get in. That I became a drug addict.
