Uttar Pradesh Police was left in a fix on Saturday after a man appealed to file an FIR against a group of monkeys for killing his brother in Tikri village of Baghpat district. The pile of bricks collapsed and fell on Dharampal, leaving him injured.

Hit on the head and chest, the elderly man died in hospital later. The family of the deceased have filed a formal police complaint naming the animals. He, however, clarified that the police is considering this matter as an accident not as a murder.

Giving a different account of what happened, Krishnapal Singh, the brother of the 70-year-old, said that Dharampal was collecting wood for a "havan" (ritual) when he was attacked by the monkeys. These rogue monkeys are the real culprits and must pay for it'. As per villagers, monkeys in the area have made their lives hell and the entire local population is greatly inconvenienced.

Krishnapal Singh said the family will now meet senior police officers and request them to take action against the primates.

But police insisted they can not open a case against monkeys and instead declared Mr Singh's death an accident. "This will make us a laughingstock", Chitwan Singh of Doghat police said in response.

"How can we register the case against monkeys?" He said the incident had been registered in the case diary and an autopsy had been conducted. As per wildlife experts, most of these attacks were launched by rhesus macaque monkeys.
