The Suns continued an unfortunate trend in the wrong direction, posting a record of just 21-61 last season. Warren, Phoenix looked like a competent team for the first time in years.

Deandre Ayton #22 of the Phoenix Suns stands is introduced to the National Basketball Association game against the Dallas Mavericks at Talking Stick Resort Arena on October 17, 2018, in Phoenix, Arizona. Ignited by Booker's lethal shooting, the Suns pulled away from the Mavericks in the final seven minutes of regulation to secure a 121-100 win.

If one game is an indication, he'll do just fine.

After shipping Brandon Knight to the Houston Rockets and not signing a point guard through free agency during the offseason, rookie Elie Okobo is the only other point guard active on the opening night roster, while new Suns guard Jamal Crawford gets adjusted to the team. Ayton made his presence felt on the court as he scores 18 points, grabs 10 rebounds and dishes out six assists. His first bucket came with an and-1 against Doncic down low. Devin Booker led the winners in scoring with 35 points, on shooting 6-of-10 from the 3-point range.

Igor Kokoskov went with the experience in the starting lineup of Ryan Anderson and Trevor Ariza with T.J. Warren and Josh Jackson coming off the bench.

Doncic, the No. 3 overall pick, struggled from the field, making 5 of 16 shots - 0 of 5 3-pointers - for 10 points. Canaan was one of nine players to start at point guard for Phoenix last season.

"It kind of upsets me because we work so hard and we shouldn't them to have those runs, and it's all mental breakdowns", Kokoskov said.

Overall, it was a great way to start the season, especially since the Suns were able to put a late comeback attempt from Dallas to rest.
