China's top Macau representative Zheng Xiaosong, dies after falling from his building

The 55-kilometer long bridge (34 miles) will cut travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai (in China's southern Guangdong province) from three hours to 30 minutes. Shuttle buses cost $8-$10 for a single trip depending on the time of day. The six-lane bridge has been constructed in just nine years.

The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of China's State Council says in a statement Sunday that Zheng Xiaosong, the director of China's liaison office in Macau, was suffering from depression. "You see it, and you know you're linked up to the motherland", Claudia Mo, said an independent lawmaker who supports greater democracy in Hong Kong.

The most senior Chinese mainland official in Macau charged with witnessing the implementation of the "One country, two systems" policy and the local efforts at economic diversification has died reportedly after a fall on Saturday from a residential building in the city.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said in a statement that she was "grieved to learn of his sudden departure".

The extraordinary design also includes a 6.7km (4mile) submerged tunnel to help it avoid the busy shipping paths over the Pearl River Delta.

The tunnel runs between two artificial islands, each measuring 100,000 square metres in relatively shallow waters.

Guo finished by speculating that Chinese officials from its public security services and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection could also face danger in the future.

Construction of the massive infrastructure project began in 2009 and has been dogged by delays, budget overruns, corruption prosecutions and the deaths of construction workers.
