"Halloween" Launches With Massive $77.5M Opening Weekend

These figures also surpass that of Marvel's alien-superhero film Venom, which grossed an impressive $80.2 million gross on its opening weekend. The flick is a direct sequel to the 1978 classic horror film of the same name in which the original scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis returns in her role as Laurie Strode.

Internationally, Halloween brought in an estimated $14.3 million from 23 markets, with Mexico leading the way with a chart-topping $4.9 million opening followed by the U.K. & Ireland ($3.6m), Russian Federation ($1.79m) and Indonesia ($1.09m). The film still has 46 markets yet to open in including France next weekend followed by Australia, Brazil, Italy, Germany and Spain the following weekend and South Korea on October 31. It's also the biggest launch ever with a female lead over 55 years old. The follow-up has garnered some of the best reviews for a series entry yet.

Among viewers, Halloween has earned a CinemaScore of B+ with males making up 53 percent of ticket buyers while 60 percent of the audience was over the age of 25.

Fox's The Hate U Give expanded nationwide this weekend after two weeks in limited release, rising to sixth place this weekend for $7.5 million.

A Star Is Born only dropped 32.3% from last weekend, bringing its domestic total to $126.3 million and $201 million worldwide, from a $36 million budget. The film totaled $8.6 million on its second weekend in cinemas and ended up in a awful fifth place behind Goosebumps 2. That brings its North American tally to $28 million.

Rounding out the top five is Universal's "First Man", which notched $8.5 million this weekend for a total of $30 million.

Another surprisingly strong showing puts October 54.5 percent ahead of the same frame past year, as well as 12 percent ahead of 2014's record month, according to comScore.
