One of the quakes, which was measured at a magnitude of 6.5, hit approximately 200 kilometres from the Vancouver Island community of Port Alice on Sunday night.

Geophysicist Amy Vaughan says the three larger quakes ranged from magnitude 6.5 to 6.8 and that there were possibly some smaller ones as well as some aftershocks.

Multiple powerful earthquakes ranging from a 4.9 in magnitude to 6.8 have struck near Vancouver Island, around 200 kilometres south-west of Port Hardy.

The second stronger quake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, occurred 122 miles southwest of the Canadian town more than half an hour later, at 11:16pm.

Official agencies reported that there was a possibility the earthquakes could have been felt lightly in parts of Vancouver Island, but that damage was unlikely.

The quake happened at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres and no tsunami was expected.

The third quake was reported at magnitude 6.5 just before midnight, near the same area as the previous two.
