Scotland's Marc Warren, who began the week 144th on the money list, is a shot off the lead after playing the first nine holes of his second round in two under par, with France's Gregory Bourdy alongside Warren on four under after an opening 67.

"Three-time European Tour victor Warren, who started on the back nine, carded three birdies in his opening eight holes before dropping a shot at the 18th - as he had done in the first round - to leave Chesters out in front alone again".

Play was due to resume at 9:10am local time (6pm AEDT) on Saturday but with more bad weather forecast, the tournament could be extended until Monday or reduced to 54 holes.

Warren then bogeyed the 18th for the second time on the day, and he narrowly missed a birdie putt from 25 feet on the first green when the klaxons sounded to curtail the action once again.

His compatriot Gonzalo Fernandez Castano is also just two off the lead after seven holes of his second round, having completed an opening 70 with a superb up-and-down from behind a tree at 18 in the morning, and the seven-time victor on the European Tour will have a decent look at eagle on the 17th green when he arrives back at the course.

More than four hours was lost as play was twice suspended because of stormy conditions and the threat of lightning at the Real Club Valderrama in southern Spain on Thursday.

Sergio Garcia got off to a quick start in his bid for a third consecutive Valderrama Masters title on Thursday, as a three-under-par 68 left him just two strokes off the early clubhouse lead.

He is in a group which features three players - Alvaro Quiros, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Oliver Farr - who were all able to begin but not finish their second rounds.

"This is not a long-hitters course and I'm not one of those, so it does suit my game because you just put it into position off the tee and the greens are tight - the greens are great as well".
