One person was seriously hurt in the accident at the city-centre Repubblica station, according to Italian police.

Fans were headed toward Rome's Olympic Stadium, where CSKA Moscow was scheduled to play AS Roma on Tuesday.

Approximately 20 soccer fans in Rome have reportedly been injured in terrifying escalator malfunction caught on film.

Footage on social media shows people piling up at the bottom of an escalator as it rapidly descends.

Emergency services are at the scene and the station has been closed, Italian news agency Ansa reported.

Sky Italia (via the UK's Daily Mirror) reports that the injured fans were from Russian Federation.

La Repubblica newspaper's website said the escalator broke after singing and chanting fans started to jump up and down on it.

Dozens of beer bottles are also pictured in and around the station after fans dropped them in the chaos.

More than 100 firefighters were scrambled to the metro station this evening.
