The service is now offering complimentary 4K upgrades for supported digital titles in your library. When you open the Google Play Movies & TV app, you will be notified about the films you own that have been upgraded to 4K.

If you already own a bunch of movies on Google Play Movies & TV, Google will now give you free access to 4K versions of those movies as they become available for free.

All you have to do to receive the 4K upgrades is open the Google Play Movies & TV app, and you'll see a screen like the one at the top of this post that will let you know how many movies in your collection were upgraded. In order to be eligible for the 4K upgrade, titles must have been purchased or redeemed from Google Play or YouTube. Supported studios now include Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony (US only), and Warner Brothers. An update should soon be rolling out to Samsung, LG, and Vizio TVs that introduces a more modern design and improved experience. Likewise, the platform will continue to add upgrades in the future as more 4K titles are made available from participating studios.

To help more people watch 4K, Google says that owners of 4K Samsung Smart TVs can now watch 4K content using their Play Movies & TV app. Starting today, some previously-purchased movies will automatically be upgraded to 4K quality once it's available.

Additionally, starting now Google Play 4K movies will also cost less, though Google hasn't indicated how much less.
