Pep Missing Two Players Heading Into Shakhtar Clash

Pep Guardiola hailed Manchester City's slick first-half display in the 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League as the best of his time in charge.

David Silva put City ahead on the half-hour mark, before Aymeric Laporte doubled the advantage and Bernardo Silva scored just two minutes after coming off the bench.

"We are together three seasons, we know each other better", he said. "We created a lot of chances and didn't conceded any until the last few minutes".

"We were under pressure after defeat against Lyon [in the first group game], but now we are in a good position".

"We saw in the second half what Shakhtar Donetsk can do, but it's so important to get this result and we will enjoy tonight and in the next days this victory".

"We have recovered well from Lyon and now it's in our hands".

City's finishing initially lacked the conviction to match their dominance as Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez passed up fine opportunities to open the scoring.

Bernardo Silva's strike after the break rounded off a polished display that delighted Guardiola, who before the match had openly doubted his team's chances of winning the competition.

What looked a potentially hard 1,700-mile visit to the Ukrainian champions, who had beaten Pep Guardiola's men in the group stages previous year, was made to look effortlessly routine as the dazzling David Silva orchestrated their dominance. We did really well today, we had lots of chances and we scored three so we're happy. When you arrive in the later stages we have to be more clinical.

"First half we were outstanding", he said. "We play to win every game and the upcoming one will be no different".

'It was an unbelievable result.

However, Kevin De Bruyne is included in the squad for the fixture against Shakhtar after making a return to action in their 5-0 drubbing of Burnley in the Premier League at the weekend.
