The updated trademark filings, which were spotted by the eagle-eyed Patently Apple, refers to the as-yet unannounced AirPods 2 as Class 10 hardware.

The first of these major spoilers is that the Apple AirPods 2 will support Bluetooth 5.0 instead of the Bluetooth 4.2 version that was available on the original AirPods. This certification suggests that Apple could announce the AirPods 2 sooner than expected.

Interestingly, the earbuds might come with a new health sensing technology, which is more aligned to Apple's greater vision. Bluetooth 5.0 will mean that the second-gen earbuds will support a 50m wireless range and two times the amount of data transmission, plus a longer battery life overall.

According to the leaked Bluetooth SIG certification, the new earbuds are identified by the model numbers A2031 and A2032, which are believed to identify the left earbud and right earbud, respectively.

While we'll obviously have to wait until further notice to confirm, at least some of the health and wellness sensors mentioned under Class 10 - namely, the heart rate, pulse and O2 monitors - are already among the most anticipated feature improvements of AirPods 2. The report further claims that the original trademark for the upcoming AirPods was filed on August 22 past year, that hints at including audio recording, voice recognition, and remote control.
